Unlike healthy healing, wound separation prevents a wound from closing neatly. Edges of the incisions cannot be held together by sutures, staples, or another method of closure. This situation is called wound separation and it is important to be able to identify wound separation as early as possible and take the necessary at-home treatment steps.

During an operation, your surgeon makes an incision or cut. As the cut heals, the wound fills in with new tissue.

If stress or other factors cause the edges of a wound to separate before the new skin has time to strengthen, the wound won’t close. The granulating tissue will tear open or won’t come together at all.

A wound is at the greatest risk of wound separation in the first two weeks after surgery when the skin is still very fragile. For more information and pictures please visit our Facebook group .

Klinik Europe recommends that you are in touch with your coordinators after you returned home for wound healing monitoring. We usually recommend iodine solution application twice a day for two weeks. Our aftercare team monitors the drying out and healing and may increase the iodine application to three times a day. We will be sending you home with an aftercare kit. Here you will find either an antibiotic cream or an iodine solution for your application. If you require iodine despite the antibiotic cream, you can buy this from any pharmacy, CVS or Boots. Make sure you use at least 10% iodine solution and max can be 15%.
